A Personable Approach:

I offer two types of assessment to help understand how your child learns, reads, spells and writes:

  • A full diagnostic dyslexia assessment for children aged 8 years and above.
  • A non-diagnostic dyslexia screener for younger children or families seeking early insight and support.

All assessments are tailored to your child's individual needs and take place in a calm, relaxed environment.

For reassurance, it can be helpful to think of the assessment as a series of activities rather than typical classroom tests.

My Assessments:

Provide a comprehensive written report tailored to your child’s individual profile.

Build a detailed understanding of how your child learns by assessing language, memory, processing and literacy (and mathematical) skills, helping to identify both strengths and areas where support may be beneficial.

Offer practical, personalised and evidence-based recommendations to support your child at home and in school.

Present results in a detailed score table using standardised scores, allowing comparison with students of the same age.

Consider current access arrangement criteria, where relevant, for Key Stage 2 tests (SATs) and examinations regulated by the Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ).

May provide supporting evidence for future Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA) applications, where appropriate.

Follow recognised professional standards:

Hold a current Assessment Practising Certificate (APC), ensuring my assessment practice remains current, evidence-based, and professionally regulated.

Assess and interpret findings in line with the latest UK Delphi Definition of Dyslexia (Carroll et al., 2025).

Follow the professional standards and guidance set by the SpLD Assessment Standards Committee (SASC), helping to ensure reports are widely recognised and accepted by schools, universities, and workplaces.

My Services:

Depending on your needs, my priority is to help you better understand your child's learning profile and recognise their strengths so they can reach their full potential.

Whichever option you choose, your child will be supported throughout in a reassuring, positive and child-centred way.

I would be pleased to answer any questions and help you decide on the next steps that are right for your child

The Assessment Process

If you're considering a dyslexia assessment for your child, here's an overview of what happens before, during, and after the assessment.

Initial telephone consultation

A free, informal opportunity to discuss your concerns, explore the most appropriate next steps towards gaining a clearer understanding of your child's learning profile.

If you choose to proceed, payment will be requested to reserve an assessment date that works for you.

Before the assessment

A recent sight test (ususally within the last 12 months) from your local optician is required before the assessment can proceed, to ensure that any literacy difficulties are not primarily related to uncorrected vision problems.

Background information will be gathered through questionnaires completed by parents, school, and the learner. This information needs to be completed in advance and will be reviewed alongside assessment results and observations to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the learner's profile, strengths, needs, and any areas of difficulty.

During the assessment

Once your child feels settled, the assessment will be carried out at their own pace, with rest and movement breaks provided as needed.

To reduce fatigue and support wellbeing, I encourage the assessment to be divided into two shorter sessions. This helps ensure that each learner remains focused, comfortable, and able to demonstrate their abilities as accurately as possible.

For convenience, several local cafés are nearby, and I can send a message shortly before the assessment ends so that you can plan your time accordingly.

After the assessment

Following the assessment, a detailed written report will be completed. This will outline your child’s strengths and areas of need, together with practical recommendations, regardless of the assessment findings.

Please note that a diagnosis of dyslexia is not an automatic outcome in a diagnostic assessment. Diagnostic decisions are based on a thorough evaluation of the evidence gathered and will be clearly explained in the final report.

Timeframe

Your written report will be returned within two weeks for a non-diagnostic screener and three weeks for a diagnostic assessment.

Post assessment debrief

A 30-minute phone or FaceTime consultation is included to explain the key findings of the diagnostic report. This is usually arranged within a week of receiving the report, allowing time for you to read and consider its contents.
